driving

I drive and I drive and I drive and I drive and then I have yet another reason to get back into the car and drive some more. Hundreds of miles per week, it is not uncommon for me to spend 4 hours of my day behind the wheel of a vehicle. Driving to 3 jobs spanning 50 miles of 2 valleys in my own vehicle, not to mention that one of these jobs is delivering to nuclear medicine departments in hospitals from Ogden to South Salt Lake in a state car--
The irregular verb that best describes my daily monotony: "to drive" conjugated as such:
Base Form: Drive
Past Simple: Drove
Past Participle: Driven
3rd Person Singular: Drives
Present Participle/Gerund: Driving
I don't know what happened today, but I returned from my morning run of driving (6am-8:45am) to find that I had another run to go on (9am-10am) and I got incredibly emotional about it. I really need a minute to decompress. I just didn't want to anymore. Not when I know i have a 45min drive to teach, the 45 min drive back to teach again (completing a 12 hour work day), and I'm probably going to have to go grocery shopping today ... driving to the grocery store right now sounds utterly overwhelming.
*Note: I realize how lucky I am to have these jobs and greatly appreciate them regardless of my complaining at times.
*Also note that my friends are now: neil conan, renee montagne, steve inskeep, terri gross, diane rehm, doug fabrizio, ira glass, you know the crew...

one year
i sometimes find myself in awe that time can be quantified. one-year seems to mark a mile stone of sorts, encapsulating so much and the blink of an eye simultaneously. one-year with my darling has included things i couldn't have imagined, it's been unbelievably stressful and incredibly easy (simultaneously), including and certainly not limited to:
"the letter". 2 complicated break-ups (among other things). las vegas. my birthday. graduating college (with a decent GPA). straight A semester at Cambridge University (UK). Cambridge-London-Amsterdam-Prague -Budapest. Erykah Badu and Al Green (those being the two most notable). Yellowstone. christmas in Coeur D' Alene. Canyonlands think tank (notable with all of the national drilling controversy). Transfusion Hype Dance Company. dance faculty position at UVU and teaching modern dance at UU. senior thesis. a new apartment together. his birthday. valentines
maybe it doesn't look like much, however, for me and the people in my life, it sure seems like a copious amount. not that i'm complaining--that's not it at all--it's been a roller coaster, an adventure, a challenge, my life has totally changed as i've grown this last year, i trust myself, i believe in following my intuition more than ever, and i feel better than i have in so long--

vday

No posts for Valentine's Day because I was too busy enjoying Cava mimosas and a pretty new money tree (trunk shown). We did take out from Bombay House (of course--if you know anything about me you know my insatiable appetite for Indian food) and a nice bottle of Pino Noir Friday (to avoid the crowds Sat.), and played it cool Saturday by staying home and whipping up a mustard/dill crusted salmon, butter parsnips, salad, and chocolate chip cookies. By the way Cook's Illustrated is the most amazing website you could ever buy a subscription to. (I made my darling German chocolate cake with a cashew, coconut, and coffee frosting--to die for--for his birthday).
P.S. For next year: Warburg's I Like You may be the sweetest gift on the planet (and only $6.95--if times are still rough).

artists for obama

Look at this wonderful Lance Wyman limited edition Artists for Obama poster my darling just bought. We're getting it framed soon. I love the homage to 1960s poster art.

purchases to feel good about
(*taken in the crowded old apt)
What i did buy at Salt Lake Antiques is this amazing trunk with original shipping stickers and tags ($100) and rad cast iron/vinyl bench ($95). I wish I had a picture to post of the gorgeous vintage vanity/dresser I bought at my favorite store (and the best secret in Salt Lake--I'll definitely blog about it soon) Emilie Jane (someone else who loves it).
In talking with the owner of SLAntiques I learned that if you're looking for furniture/antiques/consignment pieces (which I find are made with more integrity and better craftsmanship) now is a buyers market in the antique business. With such a terrible economy nothing is going for what it would otherwise be worth at auction--hence my $1000 trunk for $100. I still wish my income were higher as there are so many amazing pieces I'm coveting.
perfection
I saw this little rocking horse when I was antique shopping at Salt Lake Antiques. Unfortunately the lighting was terrible for taking photos. I absolutely hate using flash, but I can never seem to steady my hand in low-light situations. I wish I wish I could show you how perfect and expressive and melancholy this little dear is. I can't even dream of how expensive he is but if I had or was even planning on someday having a nursery I'm afraid I'd have to buy him.

Todd Powelson

This is the truly lovely poster for Transfusion Hype's show About Love 2009 March 12, 13, 14 at the Black Box Theater in downtown Salt Lake City.
Todd has been so cool to work with the company and designing loads of new pieces specifically for the show. Please take a look here.
Also, his girlfriend Anna is my belly dance instructor and she's been a tremendous help to the show as well! Her website is here. What a talented couple.
